That Feeling of Home…

This year’s WORD Christchurch Spring Festival has a distinctly local flavour, with more than 140 of Aotearoa’s writers, artists and thinkers attending the festival, making it a truly world class and home-grown event. Given that, we asked our WORD participants to write a few words of their own on their concept of what ‘home’ means to them. The answers may surprise you!
“Home is our tent under the tall trees – with leaves that whisper in the wind.
A fire nearby and the smoke whirls its way to the heavens,
and there’s a creek beside the tent, that murmurs familiar songs.
This is our simple home, we find it anywhere in the world.”
~ Miriam Lancewood
“To me, it is the sea in all its multifaceted guises – unpredictable, wild, ever-changing and yet serene – the ocean-roar a blue lullaby to carry me home.”
~ Eileen Merriman
“Home : an everyday privilege – my wife, our dog, my books, the sofa, the warming fire, our things. The one place I’m never happy to leave, and always relieved to return to. Where I can be myself, and remember how very fortunate I am.”
~ Grahame Sydney
“Travelling in the company of those you love, is home in motion.”
~ Lisa Reihana
“Home is a repository for those feelings of love and welcome, care and nourishment that no matter where you are you can create. “
~ Annabel Langbein
“Home is a word that floats above the trees.”
~ Bill Manhire
“Home for me is curry puffs and chocolate bars and diaspora daydreams.” – Weng Wai Chan
